You’re hired! London’s Greek community create ‘job revolution’ in bid to combat recession crisis

With the Greek crisis still dominating the news and uncertainty around the country’s future and possible ‘Grexit’ from Europe, London-based Greeks are making their own luck through the Reload Greece programme.

‘Reloaders’ aspire to create and fund innovative ideas that will promote job opportunities in a not-so-promising time for the Greek community, both ex-pats and those in Greece.

They’re bringing hope to young communities and are broadening horizons by linking ex-pats with young people in Greece to build an optimistic outlook for the future.

Ode on Grecian White Wines - a Modern Success Story

Once synonymous with idyllic island vacations and now with irresponsible debt, Greece has acquired a third identity: a great white-wine producing country. From the crisp Assyrtikos of the island of Santorini to the aromatic Moschofileros and Malagouzias of the Peloponnese, dry Greek white wines are lively, dynamic and very well-priced—albeit saddled with some rather challenging names.

As more and better Hellenic wines have arrived in American shops and restaurants in recent years, wine drinkers are learning to value their charms and even how to pronounce their names. James Tidwell, beverage manager of the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Dallas, Texas, said most of his customers recognize and confidently state the names Assyrtiko and Santorini on his wine list, and he knows this is true at other Dallas restaurants as well.

Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center starts to take shape

Dressed in a hard hat, rain boots and a fluorescent yellow vest for a group tour of the under-construction Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), including the new homes of the National Opera and Library, as well as a 170,000-square meter park on the shore of Faliro Bay in southern Athens, I spotted a small detail that made me smile: In the building site’s staff cloakroom, where SNFCC supervisors and architects have lockers with their names on them, I was standing next to the one belonging to Renzo Piano. The celebrated Italian architect, in charge of designing the buildings, other structures and surrounding green spaces of the new complex, is closely following each stage of the colossal project’s development during his regular visits to Athens.
