Niarchos Foundation Donates 143 Ambulances to the Greek State

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) announced it is donating 143 modern ambulances to the National Emergency Center (EKAV) and undertaking their full maintenance for the next eight years, as part of its initiative against the economic crisis and aside its regular community action.

The new vehicles will modernize 22 percent of EKAV’s total ambulance fleet of 650 vehicles, replacing older technology vehicles, SNF’s Chief Operating Officer John Zervakis said at an event held on Thursday with EKAV and the Health ministry to present the donation.

Meteora: Greece's spectacular monasteries in the sky (photos)

High above the Meteora landscape in Greece's central region, 60 monks and nuns live in fabled monasteries perched on the edge of sandstone peaks.

In centuries past, their place of worship brought them solitude and protection from unwanted trespassers. Today, the Orthodox monasteries are one of the most popular destinations in all of Greece.

Only a few hours from Athens at the fringe of the Plain of Thessaly, the town of Kalambaka plays host to Meteora's spectacular mountaintop attractions.

Windswept monoliths rise abruptly from the earth, with vertical cliffs forming a dramatic backdrop against the flat fields around them.

The picture-perfect vistas have been the inspiration for countless film and TV backdrops, including the Eyrie kingdom in HBO series "Game of Thrones."

Refugees Got Talent (video)

"In Idomeni, there were so many talented people," says Mahmoud Abdalrhim, a 25-year-old former law student from Aleppo, Syria. "We wanted to show the Europeans that refugees are talented and educated, not ignorant. [Europeans] were seeing us through a certain lens - describing us as numbers, while politicians were using us as bargaining chips. Through our videos, we wanted to show people that we are just like them."

Mahmoud fled Syria after the army tried to force him to join the fighting. He took a boat from Turkey to Lesbos, hoping to make his way to Germany, where his fiancee lives. But Mahmoud got stranded in Idomeni, a town on the Greek-FYROM border which, until May 2016, was the site of Europe's largest informal refugee camp, holding about 8,000 refugees when Greek police started clearing the camp on May 24, 2016.

Mahmoud was moved to a new camp in Oraiokastro, together with his three friends - Basil, Sameer and Mustafa, the cofounders of the satirical online television channel After initial hopes of a speedy relocation to other European countries, the mood among the camp's residents soured as time passed and the authorities were unable to offer any clarity about how long they would remain in Oraiokastro.

That's when Mahmoud, Basil, Sameer and Mustafa decided to organise a talent show.
"We wanted the residents of the camp to forget their worries," says Mahmoud.
