The emblematic stainless steel work by sculptor George Zongolopoulos "POSEIDON", height 3.90 m., will be installed permanently in the surroundings of the new Milken School of Public Health building at The George Washington University situated on one of the main streets of the capital of the United States of America.
The sculpture, which was donated by the George Zongolopoulos Foundation in Athens, was originally included in the award-winning sculptural composition with water jets that George Zongolopoulos created in 1960 for Omonia Square in central Athens, although it was never finally installed.
Many sculptures by Zongolopoulos appear in public spaces in Greece and abroad. A typical example is the impressive mobile sculpture "UMBRELLAS" which is installed in the atrium of the Council of Ministers Building of the European Union in Brussels. In 2010 the Municipality of Filothei-Psihiko installed the sculpture "POSEIDON" along with five other sculptures by George Zongolopoulos at the Sculpture Park of Psihiko, now known as "George Zongolopoulos Square.
The agreement between the President of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation Nicos Theodoridis and of General Director Angelos Moretis with The George Washington University was mediated by lawyer, collector and curator George Stathopoulos, who is a graduate of the Law School of the University and who proposed and coordinated the whole project in light of the worldwide prestige of the University and its unique location near the White House.
In attendance at the inauguration of "POSEIDON", to be held under the auspices of the President of the George Washington University on October 1st, 2014, will be prominent Greeks of America and other prominent individuals including curators of major museums, distinguished personalities of the Arts, Sciences, Academicians, etc.
At the same time, on the premises of the Milken School of Public Health at the George Washington University there will be a parallel exhibition dedicated to George Zongolopoulos with a selection of photos of his iconic large scale sculptures.
The purpose of this initiative is to familiarize the American public with the work of the internationally recognized Greek sculptor and contemporary Greek sculpture in general.
The presence of the "POSEIDON" in Washington D.C. honors both the sculptor George Zongolopoulos and Greek Art and as well as Greece itself, and the event will contribute to the further development of artistic and cultural activities between Greece and the United States.
