Greek filmmakers Matziaraki, Filippou and Lanthimos headed to the 2017 Oscars! (videos)

Yorgos Lanthimos’ dystopian drama “The Lobster,” co-written with Efthymis Filippou, was nominated on Tuesday in the Best Original Screenplay category of the 89th Oscars, making it the second time the 43-year-old filmmaker looks forward to bringing home one of the coveted gold statuettes.

The award-winning filmmaker is joined in the ranks of Oscar hopefuls by another Greek, Daphne Matziaraki, whose “4.1 Miles” was selected for the Best Short Documentary category.

“The Lobster” stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz as two people looking for love in a world where you are turned into an animal if you fail to make a romantic attachment.

Η αγωνιώδης φράση που φώναζε ο Θανάσης Μαρμαρινός βλέποντας τα μικρά προσφυγόπουλα να παλεύουν για τη ζωή τους μέσα στη φουρτουνιασμένη θάλασσα της Λέσβου το Νοέμβριο του 2015.

Έκτοτε, ο 63χρονος ψαράς από τη Σκάλα Συκαμινιάς της Λέσβου έχει αναδειχτεί σε μικρό ήρωα του νησιού, καθώς με αυτοθυσία έχει συμμετάσχει σε 75 επιχειρήσεις διάσωσης προσφύγων. Μάλιστα ήταν ένας από τους Έλληνες νησιώτες που προτάθηκε για το Νόμπελ Ειρήνης ως παράδειγμα αλληλεγγύης και τιμήθηκε μαζί με άλλους Έλληνες Μικρούς Ήρωες στο Ευρωπαϊκό Κοινοβούλιο.

George Stathopoulos: Introducing Greek artists to an international audience

In a recent trip to Athens, I had the pleasure to meet with George Stathopoulos, a leading tax and corporate attorney whose true passion is collecting and curating art. George Stathopoulos has spent over 30 years organizing exhibitions globally as a way of promoting Greek art and introducing Greek artists to an international audience. His curatorial work includes exhibitions at The Musée d’Art NaÏf Max Fourny (Paris, France), Princeton University, The National Arts Club (New York, NY), the Bank of America (Athens, Greece), and seven exhibitions at Belgravia Gallery (London, UK). A totally different project and one of his major achievements is the 2014 installation of the George Zongolopoulos sculpture “Poseidon” on the George Washington University campus. His passion and commitment in promoting Greek art was palpable throughout our conversation.

Twenty years ago she and her husband walked across the border from Albania with their two very young children to get away from the violence and desperation in their country.

They had a few relatives already in Greece but essentially they started from scratch, setting up a home.  They worked hard, often two different jobs a day.  They lived very simply.  They saved. 

When they could they sent some money and clothes back to family in Albania.  They worked.  Their children went to Greek school, became Greek.  They worked.  They sent their children to university.  They worked.  They work.  Rarely even a coffee out… 

Twenty years ago she and her husband walked across the border.

And now they offer bags of clothes to the next generation of migrants and refugees.

Ο Θάνος Δημόπουλος, πρύτανης του ΕΚΠΑ, πήρε το μεγαλύτερο βραβείο για την έρευνα για το μυέλωμα

Μία σημαντική διάκριση πέτυχε ο καθηγητής Ιατρικής Μελέτιος-Αθανάσιος Δημόπουλος, καθώς κατάφερε να πάρει το μεγαλύτερο βραβείο για την έρευνα του για το μυέλωμα. Πρόκειται για ένα βραβείο το οποίο δίνεται από το 1989 από τον ΙΜS για κάθε διεθνή εργασία για το μυέλωμα.

Το βραβείο αποτελεί για τους ερευνητές και την ιατρική επιστήμη μια σπουδαία αναγνώριση στην συνεισφορά τους στην έρευνα για το μυέλωμα. Το βραβείο έχει το όνομα του καθηγητή Waldenström ο οποίος ήταν πρωτοπόρος στην θεραπεία του καρκίνου του αίματος.
