Vassilios Skouris elected president of the European Court of Justice for record fourth time

Vassilios Skouris will serve for a fourth term as president of the EU's highest court, after an election was held this morning. Koen Lenaerts has been elected as the Court of Justice's first vice-president.

Both will serve three tears until October 2015.

Yesterday, a series of judges were sworn in at the Court of Justice, renewing the mandates of Alexander Arabadjiev, George Arestis, Maria Berger, Jean-Claude Bonichot, Anthony Borg Barthet, Carl Gustav Fernlund, Egidijus Jarasiunas, Egils Levits, Jiri Malenovsky, Alexandra Prechal, Antonio Tizzano and Thomas von Danwitz.

New judges from Portugal and the UK also took up their posts of president, vice-president and presidents of the various chambers which the court sits in.

Greek judge Skouris was re-appointed as president of the court for a record fourth time.

He has served at the ECJ since 1999, and been its president since 2003.

Belgian judge Koen Lenaerts will become the court's first ever vice-president, following changes to the institution's statute.

He served at the General Court's predecessor - the Court of First Instance - between 1989 and 2003, before taking up his post at the ECJ.

The ECJ has confirmed the appointments.
