The number of cruise tourists at Greek ports showed a considerable increase in 2011, with Santorini, Piraeus and Myconos emerging as the three most popular destinations from a total of 17 where cruise ships dock in Greece.
Last year a total of 4,937 cruise ships stopped at Greek ports, carrying 6,155,609 passengers, which is 436,350 more than in 2010, according to data published by the Association of Greek Ports.
Santorini was the destination with the highest number of cruise ship visits, amounting to 962, with 938,000 passengers, up from 700 cruise ship visits in 2010 with 775,512 passengers.
Piraeus, in second place, had 936 cruise ships visiting with 2,515,191 passengers, against 823 visits and 1,864,654 passengers in 2010. Myconos was third with 864 cruise ships and 782,365 passengers.
The increase in the figures shows that Greece has the potential for further growth in the cruise sector by making the most of its advantages such as the high number of islands, its history and its geographical position.
Still, cruise sector sources told Kathimerini that the figures could have been even higher had the necessary measures for bolstering the cruise sector been taken, such as avoiding port blockades by taxi drivers and seamen.
